Every evening around 6 p.m., on the terraces of the boulevards or on the zinc counters of small bars, the “heure verte” rings out.
The absinthe ritual was widespread in the tens of thousands of French cafés from the mid-19th century until 1915. Many painters such as Manet, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin painted absinthe drinkers in fashionable cafés and cabarets.
Charles-Felix Gir was a renowned painter, watercolourist, sculptor and illustrator. He was married to Jeanne Fusier-Gir, a well-known actress, and they attended the Paris Opera every night for 17 years where she performed. He created advertising posters for the theatre, illustrated literary works and composed press cartoons and caricatures for various satirical magazines such as l’Assiette au Beurre.
